Harriette Thompson, aged 92, is officially the oldest female marathon runner, having completed the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on 31st May 2015. She completed the race in 7 hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds.
I was really tired at one point. Around Mile 21, I was going up a hill and it was like a mountain, and I was thinking, ‘This is sort of crazy at my age.’ But then I felt better coming down the hill. And my son Brenny kept feeding me all these wonderful carbohydrates that kept me going.
Harriette has survived oral cancer three times. Her son Brenny Thompson kept her company on the route, telling her to lean right when she started to go slightly off course. She also completed the race in record time, the fastest marathon finish ever by a woman over 90. She has run the race 16 times!
